Understanding Spirituality... It's The Itch you can't Scratch

Writer's picture: Bernadette ThompsonBernadette Thompson

When your curiosity about Spirituality begins, you start seeking answers. It can begin as looking at the stars on a clear summer night, where the vastness overtakes you and you are somewhere between awe and fear. How can we be apart of this? We are a small planet.. the third rock from the Sun. Our Sun is one of billions just in the Milky Way. Are there are at least a hundred billion galaxies! That alone is enough to cause deep confusion. We often don't try and figure it out. We set it aside and go on about our lives.

And then something happens. You have what is often described as a Spiritually Transformative Experience ( STE). Something profound happens that alters the way you think about your self, your place in the world and your connection to something greater. It can be a time of deep grief when you receive a definitive sign from a loved one who has passed and now you know they are on the other side. It can be a time when you felt like something stopped you and saved you from harm. It can also be awe of the birth of a child or standing on a mountain top and seeing all that is around you.

When we were small it may have been just be wonder but as we grow our questions, our "whys" become bigger. Many of us have exposure to some kind of religious tradition as we are growing up. That is what we understood as Spirituality. The idea that the Universe and Spirituality are connected has been debated for millenniums. We have thought of it as the argument between science and religion.

When we experience a Spiritually Transformative Experience, we want to know more. Your understanding has changed in some way and you want to know why. It sets us on this journey. The big questions come up. Why is this happening? Why are we here? Is there more? It becomes the itch you can't scratch. You may be able to put it aside at times but it's always there.

It is a funny itch. We start seeking answers or just knowledge about anything and everything spiritual. We find books or podcasts. We follow people on Social Media. It helps but it isn't enough. There continues to be this yearning for more. The more you understand the more you want to know.

This itch begins to take us on this very personal journey of discovery. As you discover more of who you are, you find yourself wanting to go deeper and you often go alone. Your searching may go in directions you didn't expect. Or you may go in one direction and not find what you want. As you begin to discover an awakening happens. You learn things you can feel in your heart that you've known before. It is a journey worth taking.

Allowing yourself to take this journey will begin to bring you peace. It doesn't mean that life will become perfect. If you take the chance, you will discover a deeper meaning for your life.

You will begin to discover the path you are meant to be on...
